Sue Cheung, an author featured in the Guardian’s Best Books of 2019, visited Magnus Church of England Academy to discuss reading and literature with students.
Sue’s most recent book ‘Chinglish’, is based on her own life and is about Jo Kwan, a teenager growing up in 1980’s Coventry, living above the family’s Chinese takeaway, and tells an honest account of growing up ‘on the other side of the takeaway counter.’
Sue enjoyed speaking with young people and discussing her own life as detailed in the book. “I had two great sessions at Magnus C of E Academy, year 10s and a smaller group of sixth formers. Both audiences were intrigued by my memoir which covered hilarious anecdotes to more serious topics such as racism, bullying and mental health.”
She continued: “The quality of the questions indicated that they had held their interest to the end, and ranged from to ones relating to 'Chinglish' and also about becoming a writer. Thanks for an enjoyable afternoon Magnus!”
Year 10 student, Tia Lowe said she had enjoyed the workshop, “Sue inspired me to worry less about what people think of me, it was great to hear her honest thoughts about her time growing up.” Kaylen Ashfield, also in Year 10 said, “Sue made me laugh with extracts from the book and I enjoyed seeing all her illustrations. I'm looking forward to reading the book.”
Heather Jackson, Learning Resource Centre Manager at Magnus said the visit was a great opportunity for students. “Hearing an author talk is a wonderful experience for students and can promote a lifelong love for reading and writing.”
“I had students coming up to tell me how much they enjoyed the visit. The afternoon was a great success.”
