Magnus Church of England Academy has completed their annual 1500 mile challenge and the totals show that the event surpassed its targets.
Teacher of PE at Magnus Church of England Academy, Charlie Bilbie, explained why Magnus hold this event each year. “The 1500-mile challenge is a community and Magnusinter-house event which takes place during one school day. The aim is to run as many miles as possible, and to raise money for Beaumond House at the same time through donations. It’s a great opportunity for the school and wider community to come together and do something positive.”
Each year group at Magnus were given one hour to run as many miles as they could, getting a card stamped after each lap which is totalled up at the end of the day. Magnus teachers and children from local primary schools also joined in the effort.
Local primary schools who took part were St Peter’s Cross Keys C of E Academy, Farndon, William Gladstone Church of England Academy, Sir Donald Bailey Academy, Barnby Road Academy and Coddington C of E Primary School.
“The total distance completed was a real accomplishment.” says Charlie. “We were helped by Magnus students who helped to keep the event running smoothly, and who demonstrated our core values; in particular they showed determination and ambition to reach the target! The pupils who joined us from local primary schools were a credit to themselves and their schools, they added a real enthusiasm to the event which was a pleasure to see. In the end we managed to surpass the goal and ran 1697 miles, which would have got us close to New Zealand!”
Charlie says that the event is a great way for primary children to become accustomed to the secondary school environment. “For us as a PE department it was a chance to showcase what Magnus has to offer. We are keen to display the great stuff that is happening here at Magnusand we couldn’t have completed the event without the effort and desire that primary children showed. We want to say a big thank you to all the staff and students at Magnus, and the staff and pupils of the local primary schools who made the event such a great success.”
