A fly tipper has been handed a £200 fine after being caught in the act by a vigilant local
The local resident recorded on their mobile phone as a man illegally disposed of business waste in Blidworth. The footage was passed onto Newark and Sherwood District Council for investigation.
If the fly-tipper had not admitted to the offence in 10 days, the fine would have doubled to £400. The incident highlights the importance of proactive residents, who can provide evidence to the council to help enforce fly-tipping laws.
To help crack down on environmental crimes such as litter and fly-tipping, a new team of community protection officers have been recruited by the council. This is part of the Cleaner, Safer and Greener initiative being enforced across the district.
Council leader, David Lloyd said: “We are committed to tackling the blight of litter and fly-tipping on our district and people need to know that we are actively pursuing perpetrators of these crimes and will not hesitate in issuing fines.”
Around 1,300 incidents of fly tipping are dealt by the council per year, approximately four a day. Clean up costs can run into the tens of thousands of pounds.
Fly-tipping is a crime under the Environmental Protection Act which carries a possible fine of up to £50,000. If you witness anyone dumping waste illegally please report it on www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/flytipping.
