Newark Air Cadet to Take Part in 100 Mile March

Kira Darby is currently Flight Sergeant in the 1260 Squadron in Newark and is taking part in a one-hundred mile march next week.

Kira Darby, part of 1260 Squadron in Newark, will be going to the Netherlands to march 100 miles over four days from Tuesday 16th July.

16 year old Kira will be joining 6000 other marchers and is the only participant from Newark Squadron to join the march in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

In order to qualify, Kira undertook two fifty mile marches, Kira’s mum Debbie Darby spoke of her pride at her daughter overcoming all obstacles to complete the march; “When she did her first 50 miles she called me a few times and messaged me very tearful saying her feet were hurting and she couldn’t carry on. I was messaging her and giving as much encouragement as I could. When she finished her first 50 mile it was really emotional.”

On both qualifying 50 mile marches Kira had to have first aid attention for blisters, on the 100 mile march participants have to prepare their feet with oxide tape to act as a second skin in an attempt to avoid this.

The march will be Kira’s first trip abroad, she recently graduated from Lincoln College and is returning to do Air Defence and Engineering in September with the aim of eventually joining the RAF.
