Newark Rugby Club

Newark Rugby Club members elected a new life member at the annual general meeting held in the clubhouse on Monday evening.

David Pick, who is leading the team constructing the new clubhouse at Kelham Road, was elected to join an illustrious group led by former England international Dusty Hare and the club’s former trustee Brian Fisher.

Richard Derry, the club’s chairman, proposed the nomination of the former first team prop recalling the emergence of a young colt fresh from Magnus School in the mid 70's
“Since then David has made a significant contribution to the club,” the chairman said.

“He has always been a very much hands-on volunteer.
He played a big role in extending the old clubhouse in the mid-1980s and is now leading the group behind the construction of a new clubhouse.

He is so involved in the project that he is helping the demolition team to take down the structure he originally helped build.
Besides his work on the clubhouse, David is very much the club’s ‘Mr Newark & Notts Show’ and has helped organise the club’s volunteering effort at the annual show for more than 25 years.”

The meeting also voted to accept the nominations as vice presidents of Alan Staines and Mark Jenkins for their work in helping to organise the mini and youth sections.

President Alan Swain was elected to stand for a further year while two new directors were appointed in David Godfrey, who will be club secretary, and Adam Doran as commercial director.

The chairman thanked three retiring directors for their contributions in club secretary Nick Poulson, sponsorship chairman John Cook and Mark Jenkins for his efforts on mini and youth.

President Alan Swain told the meeting that the club remained on target to open the new changing facilities in September while phase two of the clubhouse rebuild should be finished by the end of the year.

It is intended to start the final phase of the rebuild in April 2018.
A members’ loan scheme will be launched in August to sustain a fund raising campaign, which started three years ago, to meet a grand target of over £1 million.
