NEWARK FLOWSERVE turned on the style to hit 13 goals without reply against a hapless Borrowash Victoria at a rain-swept Lowfields in the East Midlands Counties League on Saturday afternoon.
In each of their previous outings, The Highwaymen had led 3-0 at the interval but then taken their collective feet off the gas in the second period. Not this time. 5-0 up at the break, they impressively maintained the pressure and ran in a further eight goals in what could prove to be a vital 45 minutes.
It looks as though it is going to be tight at the top come the final reckoning, and the weekend’s goal spree takes Flowserve’s goal difference (+42) to a significant ten clear of both title rivals Selston and Sherwood Colliery.
Allowing for fixture changes due to cup commitments, Flowserve travel to Sherwood Colliery at the end on the month (Saturday November 24) and have home games against Selston on Saturday December 29 and Sherwood on Saturday March 16.
Flowserve did a swap loan deal with Harrowby United in midweek which saw Harry Wakefield depart after four ineffectual appearances in the orange and black, and Tyrell Shannon-Lewis join the Newarkers’ ranks.
The likable striker nicknamed ‘Tizer’ brings with him an impressive CV that includes 45 goals in 35 appearances for EMCL side Clifton All Whites last season, and he wasted no time in scoring twice in the romp on Saturday.
Leading marksman Sam Agar netted a first half hat-trick to take his goals tally to 16 in 15 games this term, and Danny Meadows and Elliot King were both on target in the first half in front of an encouraging attendance of 82 hardy souls who braved the freezing rain on the coldest October afternoon for ten years.
The temptation would have been to get the cigars out and settle for the three points after the interval but, urged on from the technical area by joint-manager Craig Roche who constantly demanded a professional approach from his players, the Flowserve boys responded with further goals from King, Shannon-Lewis (2), Jack Beckett, Sol Miller, skipper Tom Potts and substitutes Liam Moran and Callum Smith.
It all rounded off a baker’s dozen for Flowserve – and it gave their title rivals plenty to chew on over the remainder of the season.
