Inter Counties Match - Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Northamptonshire & Derbyshire – Thursday 27th June 2019

On Thursday 27th June Newark Golf Club provided the venue for the Four Counties Match between Captains and Past Captains of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland and Northamptonshire.

The format for the day is a team of 24 players from each County. The top 10 Stableford scores of each County are then added together to determine the result and winner of the Alan Packer Trophy.

It was a keenly contested match and by 3 points only, Nottinghamshire prevailed on this occasion beating Leicestershire & Rutland 343 points to 340 respectively.

The top 10 of Nottinghamshire included 4 Newark members namely John Allen, Graeme Macdonald, David Hood and Keith Goodwin. It is 8 years since Nottinghamshire won this Trophy.

Seniors’ Captain’s Charity Day – Monday 1 July 2019

More than 60 of Newark’s Seniors Section turned out to pay a fiver to play in Seniors’ Captain Len Astill’s Charity Day, in aid of Beaumond House Community Hospice

It was a tight finish on a windy but bright day, with Simon Channon (14 handicap) winning with 38 pts.  Paul Speakman (6) was second with 37 and Howard Wibberley (16), with a back nine of 21, was best of a group on 36.

The Seniors Section raised funds for Beaumond House throughout the year.  This event’s £300+ will be added to proceeds from raffles and fines, to be presented to Beaumond House after the Hole in One event in the autumn.

Seniors Exchange Day... a good day for new recruits!

Rock Hastings and Graeme MacDonald, two of the most recent recruits to Newark Golf Club’s Seniors’ section, were the principal winners at the Exchange Day at Beeston Fields GC on 17 June.

Conditions were difficult, with slippery greens, lush fairways and a strong wind.

Only Hastings and Chris Davies managed 36 Stableford points, with Hastings having the better back nine to collect the trophy and his prize. MacDonald, and his team of Trevor Harris, David Tucker and John Allen, won the team competition with 78 points. MacDonald also won the nearest the pin competition.

In all, 36 Seniors took part and just under £100 was raised for Beaumond House via a series of ‘silly’ fines. This will be added to the annual fundraising and presented later in the year.

Blankney’s Greens Beat Mixed Team

Newark’s Mixed team more than met their match at Blankney on June 14, with Joe Andrade and Laura Anderson being the only winners out of nine pairs. Several matches were close, but Blankney’s undulating greens caught most of the Newark golfers out.

Considering the weather earlier in the week, Blankney was in excellent condition with dry fairways and playable bunkers….until a brief ‘monsoon’ halfway through the afternoon.
